Stone on Stone - Digital Stereotomy
Lecturers: M.Sc. Dipl.-Ing. Eva Hagen, Akad. Dir. Cornelie Leopold, Dipl.-Ing. Benedikt Blumenröder
The stereotomy has a long tradition. Geometry and architecture come together through the art of stone cutting. The elective / seminar “Stone on Stone - Digital Stereotomy” aims to enable competencies in historical research with practical knowledge of the local material, red sandstone, as well as competencies in the digital chain from 3D modeling to materialization with the help of robot-controlled processing in a research-oriented seminar. Practical experience with the material red sandstone and its processing are brought into our project through a collaboration with Martin Picard from the natural stone factory Natursteinwerk Carl Picard. There are workshops on the CAD software Rhinoceros and Grasshopper.
The focus is on understanding and handling the geometry in a controlled manner. Additional course content provided an overview of digital representation methods such as the creation of vector graphics, visualizations and computer-aided model making. The 1: 1 project was implemented with the help of the robot.
